Cherenkov radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation, primarily composed of short wavelengths, emitted when a charged particle travels through a dielectric medium at a speed exceeding the phase velocity of light in that medium. This phenomenon was discovered by Soviet physicist Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov in 1934 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1958.
